When does a lock need servicing or repair?

Changes in how a lock operates are worth checking before the door becomes unusable. A key that catches, a stiff mechanism or a door that no longer locks reliably can indicate a need for maintenance or repair.

Contact us if you notice any of these problems:

• The key is difficult to insert or remove.
• The key feels stiff or catches when turning.
• The lock only works when you lift, pull or push the door.
• The latch or bolt does not move or return normally.
• The door does not lock reliably.

Avoid forcing the key or lock. If its operation has noticeably changed, describe the symptoms to us so we can assess the appropriate next step.

The problem is not always inside the lock

Door alignment, worn hinges or the position of the strike plate can also affect a lock’s operation. If the lock works with the door open but catches when it is closed, the door or strike plate may need adjustment.

We check how the lock and door work together. This helps establish whether the problem requires lock maintenance, component repair or an adjustment to the door and locking hardware.

What can lock maintenance and repair include?

The work depends on the lock’s design, condition and the fault identified. Servicing may include cleaning the mechanism, lubrication according to the manufacturer’s instructions, checking fixings and making adjustments. Repairs may involve replacing worn or damaged components where suitable parts are available.

After the work, we check that the door opens, closes and locks correctly. Where needed, we also explain how to use and maintain the lock.

Should the lock be repaired or replaced?

Servicing or adjustment may be enough if the lock is otherwise in good condition. Repair can be an option when the fault is limited to an individual component and a suitable replacement part is available.

Replacement may be appropriate if the mechanism is badly worn, damaged or no longer supported by available parts. We explain our findings and the options before you decide. Any lock replacement is agreed separately.

The cost depends on diagnosing the fault, the type of lock, the work required and any replacement parts. Your location and the timing of the visit also affect the price.
