What is lock rekeying?

Rekeying changes a lock’s internal key combination to work with new keys. The old key will no longer open the rekeyed lock. Replacing the entire lock or lock case is not always necessary.

The method depends on the lock’s construction and key system. Before agreeing the work, we assess the existing hardware, its condition and any system restrictions. Not every lock can be rekeyed.

When should you consider rekeying?

Rekeying may be appropriate when you want to change which keys can access a property. Common situations include:

• Moving into a home without knowing who holds copies of the old keys.
• Losing a key or having it stolen.
• Keys not being returned at the end of a tenancy or occupancy.
• Changes in who uses business premises, requiring a review of key access.

If a missing key opens several doors, rekeying one lock does not stop it from working in the others. Tell us which doors the key could open so we can assess the scope of work required.

Rekeying or replacing the lock?

Rekeying may be an option if the existing lock is in good condition and the aim is to stop old keys from working. Replacement may be necessary if the mechanism is worn or damaged, rekeying is not possible or you want a different locking solution.

If the key sticks or the door does not lock correctly, servicing, repair or door adjustment may also be needed. Rekeying alone will not necessarily resolve a mechanical fault.

Rekeying locks in housing company and rental properties

A flat’s lock may belong to a shared key system, where one key opens the flat as well as the building entrance or communal areas. Changes to the flat’s lock need to take the wider system into account.

Before booking, check the required approvals and system requirements with your landlord or property manager. Let us know whether the lock belongs to a shared system and whether you have details identifying the lock or key system. This helps us establish which options are available.

Can several locks work with the same key?

In some cases, compatible locks can be rekeyed to use the same key. This depends on their construction, key system and access requirements.

Tell us which doors you want to open with one key. We check compatibility before agreeing the work. Locks from different systems cannot automatically be made to work with the same key.

How much does lock rekeying cost?

The cost depends on the lock type and key system, the number of locks, required components and the number of new keys. The property’s location and scope of work also affect the total price.

When requesting a quote, tell us how many locks are involved, their make or model if known, and how many new keys you need. We assess feasibility and agree the scope and price before starting. Any additional work is agreed separately.
